Writer-director Woody Allen creates movies his way

Woody Allen's new movie, Cassandra's Dream, had its North American premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival two days before another movie that, on paper, sounds similar. Both are dramas about brothers who try to solve their financial problems by committing a crime. Both deal with family and moral choice. At least one brother in each film is enamored of a trophylike raven-tressed beauty.

Sydney Lumet's Before the Devil Knows You're Dead opened in October to widespread acclaim and ended the year on a number of critics' top 10 lists.

Allen's movie, which stars Ewan McGregor, Colin Farrell, Tom Wilkinson and Hayley Atwell, opens Friday.

He can't be happy about Lumet's movie, right?

"I loved it," Allen, 72, says, speaking by telephone from New York.
