Why summer movies are slumping

Audiences seem to be sending Hollywood a pretty clear message when it comes to choices at the movies.

To paraphrase "Gladiator," they are not entertained.

For weeks, box office returns have been down despite big titles on screens. Memorial Day weekend saw the lowest turnout in theaters in 17 years.

The latest "Shrek" movie has been on top at the box office for three weeks straight. That's uncommon for the summer, which usually finds the number one spot ceded to a new competitor each week. And while it's remained number one, "Shrek Forever After" is on track to be the lowest grosser of that animated film series.

People aren't going to the movies, and some industry analysts don't know why.
