Third ‘Pirates of the Carribean’ movie marks digital cinema milestone

Digital cinema is on a roll as more theaters add digital projectors to their screens. This weekend marks another milestone for digital projection as Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End becomes the first motion picture to be released on over 1,000 digital cinema screens.   "At World's End" will be the first feature to be released on more than 1,000 digital cinema screens domestically and will be the first movie to bow on more than 400 screens internationally, Buena Vista Pictures domestic distribution President Chuck Viane said. The competition for digital screens is heating up with over 3,000 screens in US cinemas alone. With the advent of 3-D cinema in the near future, digital projection is the smoking gun that theater owners will need to lure moviegoers back into theaters.
