Robert De Niro needs to get back to real acting

A couple of things got me thinking about Robert De Niro.

First, I reported a little while ago that he’s taking on the role of legendary Packers head coach Vince Lombardi. Then, Al Pacino started receiving rave reviews for his turn as Dr. Jack Kevorkian in the HBO biopic “You Don’t Know Jack.” And then, this morning, the nutty trailer for “Machete” hit the web.

Now, the De Niro-Lombardi project is a great match. Unfortunately, it’s a little too apt — lately De Niro’s career has been running in parallel to the Packers of the 1950s.

The iconic actor desperately needs a critical resurgence along the lines of what Lombardi famously brought to the woeful Green Bay team in 1959. Because the fiery, riveting De Niro of “Taxi Driver,” “Raging Bull” and “GoodFellas” has been on the bench for way too long.
