‘Public Enemies’ cars: Dillinger movie gives old-car buffs a chance to shine

Bob Steinmetz was 12 when he built his first car, using a motor from a discarded washing machine.

"That picture was taken in 1952 or '53," Steinmetz said, pointing to a framed black-and-white photograph showing his slender body hunched into what nowadays could pass as a go-kart. "That was even before they had go-karts."

The car bug never left Steinmetz, now 69. The picture from his Markham childhood hangs in the office area of a Will County garage that houses half of his classic car collection.
