Private-equity exec’s interest in movies earns him credits

John Canning, a private-equity executive by day, has already invested in minor- and major-league baseball teams on the side. Now he has another moonlighting job to add to his resume: movie producer.

The chairman of Chicago-based Madison Dearborn Partners invested $250,000 of his own money in "Romance & Cigarettes," a star-studded art film playing in the Chicago area. He's listed as one of about a dozen "co-producers" during the movie's closing credits.

On top of that, Canning also has sunk $500,000 of his personal finances into Ideal Partners Film Fund, a private placement investing in independent movies.

While Canning's dabbling in Hollywood is personal and not business, some private-equity and hedge fund firms have invested directly in the industry.
