Oscars get glitzy makeover after movie fans desert Hollywood’s big night

Low-budget films, irrelevant presenters, inane banter and limp pre-recorded segments are being blamed for reducing Tinseltown's annual glamour showcase to a predictable and bloated bore.

In an apparent attempt to return to the glory days of the silver screen, Oscar authorities have hired the director and producer of the smash hit Dreamgirls to restore the Academy Awards' reputation as the greatest show on earth.

A revamp was considered necessary after last year's ceremony attracted just 32 million viewers, the lowest in recent Oscar history, down eight million in a year and an ocean away from the 57 million who watched Titanic win best picture in 1998.
