Oprah gets her own TV network

Oprah Winfrey gets another dream fulfilled. The Queen of Daytime Television has landed herself an ownership to her new network as she and Discovery Communications announced Tuesday a deal which the Discovery Health network will be passed over to her. Winfrey will rename it OWN, the Oprah Winfrey Network.

The 53-year-old award-winning host will serve as the chairman of the network she calls "the fulfillment of yet another dream for me." She says this has been her dream for the last 16 years.

"I said from the beginning that this was an opportunity for me to step out of the box and make the kind of shows that make my heart sing," Winfrey says.

David Zaslav, Discovery chief of communications, expresses the company's enthusiasm on the deal, "We couldn't be more excited to be in business with Oprah Winfrey." The deal involved no exchanging of dollars, but it involves turning over Winfrey's website, www.oprah.com, to Discovery.

"There's no stronger brand in media than Oprah brand," Zaslav continues.

The programming, which Winfrey has full control of, will touch on the issues she covers on her talk show, including social relationships, health, money, etc.

"It's about unleashing the power of human potential, that's what it's about," she says.
