How the battle over a windshield wiper became a ‘Flash of Genius’

"Flash of Genius" is the story of inventor Robert Kearns, the idea man behind the intermittent windshield wiper. Out of this admittedly quirky premise, director Marc Abraham and star Greg Kinnear manage to present an affecting modern-day David and Goliath story.

Kearns took on the Ford Motor Co. in a protracted legal battle for the patent rights for his invention, risking his sanity and his family in the process. It's a welcome drama in light of the current financial meltdown, an understated populist fight story of family versus corporate greed. After a night of oysters on Seattle's waterfront, the ebullient Abraham and always charming Kinnear sat down with me at the Hotel 1000 to talk about what drew them to this particular story.
