The marriage of music and movies dates way back. Music could be heard in theaters before recorded sound was even incorporated into film – in the form of live performances by an in-house pianist or organist. As movies evolved so did the music that accompanied them, with more and more high profile composers of the day contributing world class music. During the golden age of cinema the majority of film music was derived from the classical tradition, often using large orchestras and emulating some of the most recognizable classical composers. While the traditional orchestra still plays a large role in contemporary film, it is by no means the only tool today’s used by film composers.
