‘Milk’ is new on DVD with excellent special features

As one the first and new Oscar nominated movies to see a release on DVD, ‘Milk’ could be the type of film to find a cult following on DVD. Four years after portraying an American anti-hero in the sadly neglected THE ASSASSINATION OF RICHARD NIXON (see Hidden Gems), Sean Penn returns to play Harvey Milk, another outcast, but a true hero who led the struggling gay community of the seventies

DVD extras include three featurettes of which “Remembering Harvey” is the most satisfying. Milk’s real-life allies, friends and confidantes, including campaign manager Anne Kronenberg and photographer Daniel Nicoletta, reminisce about Milk the charismatic leader and the gay movement he led. “Hollywood Comes to San Francisco” explains how the movie came together, with credit going to gay activist Cleve Jones (portrayed as a Milk protege in the film) who put Dustin Lance Black’s script in the hands of director Gus Van Sant.
