Coppola says he admires Pacino, De Niro, Nicholson; claims quotes out of context

Director Francis Ford Coppola contended on Saturday that he has "nothing but respect and admiration" for Al Pacino, Robert De Niro and Jack Nicholson after he was quoted as scathingly criticizing the three stars in a magazine interview.

"I was astonished because it wasn't true, and I have nothing but respect and admiration" for them, Coppola told reporters in Rome where his film "Youth Without Youth" — his first movie in a decade — was having its premiere at the city's film festival.

"These are the three greatest actors in the world today and they are my friends. So I have nothing but affection for them," Coppola said.

Coppola — who directed Pacino and De Niro in "The Godfather" trilogy — said his comments were taken out of context.

GQ magazine in its November issue quoted the director as saying that the three Oscar-winning actors have become apathetic.
