In “Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans,” Nicolas Cage portrays a cop of unwavering commitment: He never lets his duty to protect and serve stand in the way of a hard-core drug binge.

As a homicide detective policing the Big Easy’s toughest precincts in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, he snorts cocaine at crime scenes, blows marijuana smoke in the face of a suspected perp and whips out his “lucky crack pipe” to the amazement of a local drug kingpin. Amped up, antic and crackling with chemical intensity, the performance moved movie critic Roger Ebert to observe: “Cage is as good as anyone since Klaus Kinski at portraying a man whose head is exploding.”

Cage’s tweaker technique was so realistic, it caused the movie’s director, Werner Herzog — who worked with Kinski on five films — to call into question what the Oscar winner was reallyputting up his nose.

As ABC finds itself up against the final, unimaginable wrap-up season of their hugely successful island tease-athon, Lost, it seems to have found a new Atlas on whom it can rest its global expectations.

The new show is FlashForward, another mysterious, sci-fi-ish thriller based on the 1999 novel by Robert J. Sawyer. Fundamentally, it entertains a scenario where an initially unexplained global blackout gives everyone on earth a sneak peak at their own futures, six months hence.

The fun starts when you ask the question, what would you do?

David S. Goyer, scripter for Batman Begins and The Dark Knight, and Marc Guggenheim, a writer on such TV shows as Law and Order, CSI: Miami and the feature X-Men Origins: Wolverine, been working, along with fellow producer Brannon Braga to answer that question.

They spoke with the Writers Guild of America, West Web site about the central question posed byFlashForward, the huge logistical challenge of writing a show with 10 reoccurring roles, and exactly how to fill the shoes of Lost.

Back in the ’90s, F. Gary Gray was the go-to guy for some of the top rappers including Ice Cube, who brought him onboard to direct his early comedy Friday. Fourteen years later and Gray’s latest movie, his seventh, is Law Abiding Citizen, a two-handed psychological thriller starringGerard Butler and Jamie Foxx, that harks back to Gray’s earlier movie The Negotiator but shows how greatly he’s improved as a filmmaker in the ten years since making that movie. 

Butler plays Clyde Shelton, a man whose wife and daughter were murdered in a home invasion, setting him on a path of revenge that doesn’t just stop with the killers, as he also blames the prosecutor, Foxx’s Nick Rice, and everyone else involved with the case, as they’re picked off one by one while Shelton sits in a jail cell waiting for his sentencing. That’s probably already more than you should know going into this smart, sharp thriller that keeps you guessing at every turn with lots of shocks and surprises, but it’s obvious that Gray has set the right mood and tone to make it quite a riveting film.

Jonathan Houser had an idea.

The 30-something filmmaker was teaching production at the Seattle Film Institute. His students were having a difficult time with storyboarding, an element of filmmaking which Houser describes as a way to perceive how your film may look.” Or, to put it another way, “You sit down, you draw, you think and you erase.”

“You can actually create your film on paper,” he explains. “Rough out how you think it might look and almost pre-edit your film before you start filming.”

This is an essential part of the filmmaking process, though as Houser’s students were discovering, it is also a very difficult part. As the year progressed, he noticed more and more students forgoing storyboards.

And that’s about when it hit him, “my cell phone has a built-in camera and it has a little computer.”

Undoubtedly, season-finale fever drove auds to check out the cliffhanger cappers of the ABC dramas, as well as other shows that made the top 10 in video streaming: “Desperate Housewives,” “The Office,” “Dancing With the Stars” and “Survivor” among them.
