Sylvester Stallone refuses to be expendable

The lights were down low in Sylvester Stallone’s Beverly Hills office on a recent afternoon so it was impossible to see the 64-year-old movie star’s eyes behind his plum-tinted sunglasses. His snug Italian suit emphasized his still-muscular frame as he sat ramrod straight. His face doesn’t move much, either, so he seemed like a statue, until he started recounting the moment when he knew that he was becoming expendable.

“It was that first Batman movie,” he said, referring to the 1989 film starring Michael Keaton, an actor never known for biceps. “The action movies changed radically when it became possible to Velcro your muscles on. It was the beginning of a new era. The visual took over. The special effects became more important than the single person. That was the beginning of the end.”

Mel Gibson’s future movies remain up in the air

Mel Gibson has yet to comment on the audio recordings of him allegedly spewing hateful remarks and threatening then-girlfriend Oksana Grigorieva, so maybe it’s no surprise that commenting on his supposed slate of upcoming films isn’t a high priority.

That said, several films are still attached to Gibson, and until it’s abundantly clear that the productions are no longer willing to work with him, the tacit message those productions send is one of support.

First up is “The Beaver,” which is being distributed by Summit Entertainment, the same company behind the “Twilight” series. The film’s current status is post-production, according to IMDb, which gives the film a release date of 2010.

Eva Mendes is more than just a sexy face

Between Eva Mendes’s sensual Calvin Klein ads and her sexy roles in movies like “We Own the Night,” it can be hard to see the actress as anything other than a sex symbol - but Mendes is the first to admit it.

“I’m definitely responsible for the image that I put out there,” she told Allure magazine in their August issue. “But it does become frustrating because I don’t want sexy to be my defining characteristic. I’d love for my ambition and will and intellect and sense of humor to define me as well.”

Allure points out that Mendes isn’t lacking for intellect: she name drops photographer William Eggleston and author Ayn Rand in the interview, calling “The Fountainhead” one of her favorite books.

Yet just because she doesn’t want her sex appeal to be her defining quality doesn’t mean she doesn’t recognize its power.

Edward Norton Booted From New ‘Avengers’ Movie for Not Being “Collaborative”

Oscar-nominated actor Edward Norton has been booted from the latest Marvel action flick — which will also star Scarlett Johansson and Robert Downey Jr. — for not being a team player, the studio announced in a biting statement.

“We have made the decision to not bring Ed Norton back to portray the title role of Bruce Banner in the Avengers,” Marvel said in a statement. Norton, 40, played The Hulk in the 2008 remake.

“Our decision is definitely not one based on monetary factors, but instead rooted in the need for an actor who embodies the creativity and collaborative spirit of our other talented cast members. The Avengers demands players who thrive working as part of an ensemble, as evidenced by Robert, Chris H., Chris E., Sam, Scarlett, and all of our talented casts. We are looking to announce a name actor who fulfills these requirements, and is passionate about the iconic role in the coming weeks.”

Drug addiction. Child abuse. The politics of the diamond trade. Institutional corruption. Posttraumatic stress disorder.

From early movies like “The Basketball Diaries” and “This Boy’s Life” to recent hits “Blood Diamond,” “The Departed” and “Shutter Island,” Leonardo DiCaprio has tackled his share of weighty issues.

With a starring role in the sober sci-fi brainteaser “Inception” (opening Friday) and an upcoming turn as the title G-man in Clint Eastwood’s “Hoover” biopic, DiCaprio has no plans to lighten up anytime soon.

“I don’t really question [the themes of movies] when I read a script,” says the 35-year-old actor. “If I feel like I can be of service to a role, that it emotionally engages me, that it’s something that interests me, and the director is someone who has the capacity to pull off the ambitious nature of the screenplay, I never question it.

Mel Gibson’s mainstream Hollywood career is over - for real, this time

It’s interesting to try to divine the chicken-and-egg of Mel Gibson’s firing by WME last week: Was it his (first-alleged, now aurally proved) misogynistic and racist comments that enabled the agency to part ways with him, or was it the death of longtime agent Ed Limato that did the trick?

Earlier today the news surfaced that William Morris Endeavor had split with Gibson last week– as Limato lay seriously ill, and just several days after Radar Online broke the news that Gibson had verbally abused his girlfriend Oksana Grigorieva by using the N-word. (The reports were just that until today, when audio of the Gibson incident was released on Radar.)

It’s a juicy thought experiment to ask what Gibson’s agency status would have been had only one of those events occurred. (For what it’s worth, our guess is that Limato’s death without comments would have spelled the end of the relationship, while comments with Limato around probably would have kept him on the WME docket, though with dubious professional results.)

There’s of course a third variable in all this — the fact that Gibson just wasn’t much of a bankable star anymore anyway

Adrien Brody isn’t kidding himself — he knows that when people hear his name, “action hero” isn’t the first description that comes to mind.

“The comment is constantly like ’skinny actor.’ I’m thin. I’m not skinny at all,” said Brody, 37, seeming slightly irritated as he reclined poolside at a Los Angeles hotel last month. “It’s that they harp on a physical thing, because I don’t think there’s a question about my ability as an actor.”

He certainly has the hardware to back up that claim. It was nearly a decade ago that he bounded onstage at the Kodak Theatre, kissing actress Halle Berry before accepting a gold statue for his portrayal of a Jewish-Polish musician in Roman Polanski’s holocaust drama “The Pianist,” making him the youngest lead actor winner in Oscar history.

Rob Lowe to launch reality TV series in Washington, D.C.

While recent evidence suggests that Washington may not be the best place to set a reality show (read: seriously terrible ratings), the city is still proving irresistible for television producers.

Actor Rob Lowe has teamed up with the production company 44 Blue to launch a reality series with the working title “Potomac Fever,” which, according to a company executive, will follow the adventures of young Washingtonians as they try to move up the ranks in the D.C. scene.

The news comes less than two weeks after the D.C. season of Bravo’s “Top Chef” opened with the smallest crowd since the first season in March 2006, and a few months after MTV’s long-running “Real World” franchise limped out of Washington with the lowest-rated season in the show’s history
