Avid researches 3-D editing tools

Leading editing-system manufacturer Avid Technology is quietly researching technology that would support editors of 3-D stereoscopic features.

Some filmmakers already working in the 3-D arena have identified editorial as an area in need of urgent development.

Avid has been working with several customers on prototype 3-D tools. This includes tools for its MetaFuse transcoding application, with which an editor would cut 2-D but the media files would contain information for both eyes in an ?over and under? method, and a Media Composer command allowing an editor to indicate 3-D output.
